History

Surendranagar, city, central Gujarat state, west-central India It is located in the heart of the Kathiawar Island concept. The city is part of the Wadhwan urban agglomeration. The former capital of the Wadhwan princely state, it is a trading and processing centre for agricultural produce. After the amalgamation of the states, Surendranagar district was called Jhalawad. The present district, known as Surendranagar, was the headquarters of the British Political Agent.

Surendranagar has a long and interesting history. It has witnessed a few decades of freedom movement. (Colonel Howey) In 1864, on the suggestion of Colonel Howey, this place was selected to establish the Wadhwan Civil Station, after which the Political Agent of Kathiawar, Colonel Kitties, took this land on permanent lease. (Kathiawar Political Agent Colonel Kitties) After this, the Wadhwan Camp was established here as the headquarters of the Jhalawad Provincial Agency under the rule of the Western India State Agency, which we know as Kanp in the vernacular. (Wadhwan Camp) After establishing the headquarters, people from the surrounding villages started coming here for business and employment and started settling down and in this way a city took shape here. With the arrival of steam engines in May 1872, the junction of four railway lines Viramgam, Dhrangadhra, Rajkot, Bhavnagar led to the development of this camp. And more and more people started coming here for business and employment. In 1946, this city was handed over to Wadhwan Maharaj Surendrasinhji and he named this city Surendranagar. After the merger of the princely states in 1948, this city was made the district headquarters.

Surendranagar city was established in the year 1854. Earlier it was known as Wadhwan Camp or Wadhwan Civil Station. Apart from this, it was also the headquarters of the British Political Agent. After that, its rule was handed over to the Raja of Wadhwan, Shri Surendrasinhji in 1946. It was renamed Surendranagar in 1947 after the name of the Raja. This city has a significant contribution in the freedom movement and the city is considered the gateway to Saurashtra. Surendranagar district came into effect on 1 May 1960.

The surendranagar Municipal Corporation is established on 1st January 2025.
